Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), one of five departments within the Bourns College of Engineering (BCOE) at UC Riverside (UCR), and home to 26 faculty members, 89 graduate students and 511 undergraduate students. Although barely 18 years old, the prominence of our department is rising quickly, as evidenced in part by recent National Research Council and U.S. News and World Report rankings, which place our program in the first and second quartile, respectively, of all ME graduate programs in the nation.

Industry-Approved Curriculum Structure
Our strong ABET-accredited undergraduate program emphasizes engineering fundamentals coupled with hands-on engineering design and analysis. Engineering is a social enterprise and our curriculum is designed to include not only ethics, engineering economics, technical communication, and teamwork, but also a significant exposure to the humanities and the social sciences so graduates appreciate the impact of engineering on society. Our curriculum is regularly reviewed by the faculty and the department’s Board of Advisors to ensure courses best reflect the current needs of industry and is responsive to evolving employment trends.

Research-Focused Opportunities
Our faculty members are dedicated researchers who value interaction with students beyond the classroom. As part of our commitment to students, we offer a unique program to undergraduates to earn credit toward their degree by participating in research conducted by our faculty. Many undergraduates take advantage of this program, which is designed to emphasize the relationship between research and education, as well as better prepare students for subsequent graduate studies and eventual careers in research and development.

Accomplished and Diverse Faculty Roster
Our faculty are leaders in their respective fields, and their research is funded by a diverse set of federal, state, and local agencies, industrial sponsors, and foundations. Many have been honored with prestigious national and international awards and a number of our faulty also serve as Editors and/or Editorial Board Members of prominent journals. Our researchers help make up seven multi-disciplinary research clusters and are affiliated with multiple Centers and Programs across campus toward cutting-edge research.

Thanks to this rich academic environment, our graduates are well-prepared to pursue successful careers in academia, federal research facilities, and high-tech companies. I welcome you to visit the department to meet our faculty and students, and learn more about our unique educational environment.
