Faculty
Xu, Guanshui
Associate Professor, Mechanical Engineering
Professor Guanshui Xu received his B.S. Degree in Mechanics from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1986, and his Ph.D. degree in Engineering from Brown University in 1994. He also spent two years as a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joined the UCR Faculty in 1998 after three years as a project engineer for TerraTek, Inc.
Research Topics
Dr. Xu's research interests are in the general area of mechanics, material, and geophysics with an emphasis on analytical and computational modeling, and their scientific and engineering applications. His recent research work includes the development of a variational boundary integral method for the analysis of the fully three dimensional fracture growth in both isotropic and anisotropic solids; analysis of instabilities of fracture growth under mixed mode loading; analysis of toughening micromechanisms and design of particle and fiber reinforced brittle composites; nucleation of dislocations from crack tips; brittle to ductile transitions in semiconductors and transition metals; wellbore instability; and hydraulic fracturing. Currently, he is interested in the application of mechanics in the area of processing and design of smart materials and structures with complex mechanical and physical properties, especially in the microelectromechanical systems.
