Department of Mechanical Engineering

Graduate Program

Graduate Program

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) offers the opportunity for graduate study in specialized areas of mechanical engineering. It is composed of 15 faculty members and roughly 55 graduate students. We offer both Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs with a large variety of research activities.

Research

Research activities within the department span seven broad areas. They include energy processing, bio-applications, nano and microscale engineering, computation and design, materials properties and processing, multiphase flow and combustion, and air quality and fire engineering. Faculty directed research is sponsored by federal agencies (NSF, NIH, DOE, ARO, AFOSR, USDAFS, ONR, etc.), state agencies (Cal Trans, CIEE, UCTC, etc.), and industrial sponsors (Raytheon, Aeptec, Lockheed, Bourns Inc., etc.). Extramural grants received in 2008 to date exceed $1.2 million.

Faculty Honors

Several of our faculty members serve on editorial boards, and as editors and associate editors for prestigious journals in their field. Other faculty honors include one Fellow of TMS, one ASM Fellow, one ASME Fellow, one AAAS Fellow, two AIAA Associate Fellows, one ASLMS Fellow, one ARO YIP Award, one AFOSR YIP Award, two NSF CAREER awards, and one NIH K01 award recipient.

Highlights

Diversity, personal advising, and active research are the highlights of our graduate program. This is evidenced by the multiple and modern research areas you will find in this Department, the close contact and advising students have with all faculty, and the rapidly growing size and prestige of our individual research programs.

In tune with the rapid economical growth of the Inland Empire area, where UCR resides, the ME department is developing at a fast pace. The ME Department has projected a substantial growth of roughly double its current numbers of faculty and graduate students in the next 5 years. Therefore, this is a time of great opportunity for development and we would like you to be a part of it.

Costs

View the fee schedule. Fees are subject to change and may be covered as part of a fellowship, or TA or GSR appointment. Is is important to emphasize, however, that several forms of financial assistance are available and that 90% of our students are partially or fully supported by different means. Financial assistance includes fellowships, teaching assistantships (TA) or graduate student researcher (GSR) appointments, and tuition and fee grants. The department awards TAs, GSRs, and tuition and fee grants and nominates students for fellowships on a competitive basis to the campus Graduate Division. Offers of financial assistance may be multiyear, combining fellowship and TA and/or GSR appointments. Other forms of support are need-based and administered through the Office of Financial Aid.

Living and Housing Costs

UCR offers a number of options, both on campus and off campus for housing. Upon admission to our program, you are entitled to request on-campus housing through the Department of Housing Services

The University of California, Riverside is set on a beautiful park-like campus of 1,200 acres at the foot of the Box Springs Mountains.
